Will Shelby Cointy schools sue the state? That's the opinion of County Commissioner Mike Ritz who says that may be the only option for county schools to recoup the loss of millions of dollars in funding.

We shouldn't have to wait any longer thn Saturday to know who Barack Obama has chosen as his running mate. The Democratic Convention begins next week in Denver. We'll have live reports each weekday morning at 7:20 on Memphis Morning News.

Meanwhile, John McCain has inched ahead of Obama in the latest polling results. And guess who's going to speak at the GOP Convention? Joe Lieberman.

As if once or twice isn't enough, Fay may now strike Florida for a third time on its trip through the state. Forecasters say they don't expect the tropical storm to strengthen into a hurricane, but Fay has left Florida quite soggy this week.

Nearly 7 years after the 9/11 attacks, police departments around the country are flush with federal funds to fight terror. Even the smallest of cities have purchased special equipment and have erected concrete posts and guardrails to protect buildings. But now some police officials are questioning if the efforts have come at the expense of everyday crime fighting tactics. Jeff Addicott is the Director for the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary's University .

For 18 months Union Mission and several other rescue missions jave been participating in a pilot study for the National Recovery Initiative. It deals with how successful faith-based programs are in dealing with homelessness in a community. Union Mission's Scott Bjork says clients of Union MIssion heve benfited .

Collierville Mayor Linda Kerley says she will not seek re-election, after serving three terms. The main reason cited is the slowdown in the housing sales market. She and her husband are both real estate agents.

Investigators are still no closer to learning what caused a deadly house fire in Orange Mound Sunday, leaving 7 people dead. Mayor Willie Herenton visited the neighborhood promising to do what he could to speed up the return of the remains of family members.

Senator Barack Obama has taken the gloves off as he heads to next week's National Democratic Convention in Denver. Obama has challenged GOP candidate John McCain to stop questioning his patriotism. Meanwhile, McCain toured an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico to tout his support for lifting the ban on offshore oil drilling.

Both parties are hoping the presidential race this year will attract more voters than ever to the polls. Isaac Hayes' fans said goodbye to the soul legend Monday at Hope Presbyterian Church as more than 2000 people paid tribute during a lenthy memroial service highlighted by music, speeches and videos of the legendary Stax songwriter who died a week ago in his Memphis home.

No cause has yet been determined for a Sunday blaze in Orange Mound that left 7 people dead, but one report says an electrical fire hit that same home in 2005. Because of the fire's intensity, fire officials say they most likely will never know what caused the fatal fire Sunday.

Tropical Storm Fay is headed to the west coast of Florida. The storm made landfall near Naples overnight. Fox's Holly Hickmas is following the storm from Florida this morningClick Here .

The two presumptive presidential candidates are about ready to make their picks for running mates. Time is truly of the essence for Barack Obama as the Democratic National Convention begins next week in Denver. Memphis Morning News will have live updates each morning at 7:20am from Denver starting Monday.

When home sales began to slow at the start of the economic downtown, home builders offered buyers many incentives, instead of reducing prices, to stimulate demand. Those incentives included cars, tuition and credit card paymenst as well as cash. Now, the Wall Street Journal's Nick Timiraos says the FBI is probing some of these deals .

The head of the Shelby County GOP says he's disappointed with the results of the primary elections earlier this month. Bill Gianinni stopped by MMN and said an 18% turnout in a congressional primary ballot is "pathetic."Click Here
