You've Got To Be Kidding, Or Were You Kidding?
Wednesday 07-02-2008 1:10pm CT
MY GRIPE OF THE DAY:
"There's a time and place for everything," right? Well, that is unless you're planning an big surprise. Whoa, what a surprise this was and it was a silly one at that. The State of the City in Denver got a rude shock when a singer by Mayor John Hickenlooper took it upon herself to ditch the national anthem and sing what has been called the black national anthem. The singer, Rene Marie, admitted afterwards that she snookered everybody and told no one what she was going to do except her husband and a friend. She told a Denver television reporter afterward she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the Star-Spangled Banner. Ms. Marie left all of those, including the mayor, speechless as she finished the song. The mayor said he should have stopped Marie, but he was so stunned that he didn't think in time. As far as what I think about it, it should not have happened. What's that saying, "There's a time and place for everything and this wasn't the place. Ms. Marie double-crossed the mayor and should not get the chance again. Nobody should swap the national anthem for any song. Period.
Dr. Cash: Hope You Are Wearing Ear Plugs
Tuesday 07-01-2008 12:46pm CT
MY GRIPE OF THE DAY:
I don't know much about Dr. Kriner Cash. I know he's now one of the busiest men in Memphis, taking on all the problems related to the Memphis City Schools. Dr. Cash now has the responsibility of righting the MCS's many and varied problems. Here's my wish that we let Dr. Cash alone for six months. He doesn't need the Morning Publication telling him what to do. He doesn't need me to be filling his ears with what has happened in the past. What he needs is a pair of ear plugs. Yes, you heard me right -- a pair of ear plugs.
